Besonderes Interesse bringt Schrat ökonomischen Zusammenhängen entgegen, die er als kulturelles Material begreift, das vom Künstler anverwandelt wird.
Neben illustrationsahen Formen und Grapic Novels sind großformatige Wandbilder und ortsbezogene Arbeiten ein Hauptbereich seines Werkes. Die Wandbilder sind durchgängig als Silhouetten ausgeführt, und zitieren damit eine historisierende Form, die zeitgenössisch aufgeladen wird.
Eine gleiche Umwertung historischer Handwerkstechniken betreibt Schrat etwa, wenn er mit Holzintarsien arbeitet, oder die traditionelle asiatische Tuschmalerei für zeitenössische Erzählungen nutzt.
Beispiele seiner Arbeit waren im Forum Ludwig, 2005/06, in Eat the Food, (MOCCA, Toronto), Golden Eagle Art Center, (Nanjing, China), oder im Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin 2014 zu sehen. Eine interessante Position unter diesen Wandbildern nimmt Milch und Honig ein, ein Arbeit für das Casino des Deutschen Bundestages, das mit dem Märchen vom Schlaraffenland arbeitet (courtesy siebenhaar art projects).
Henrik Schrat (1968*) has studied Stage Design and Painting in Dresden, and finished an MA in Fine Art Media at the Slace School of Fine Art, London. He has completed a doctoral thesis at the Essex Business School on the subject of visual narration within organisations. Economy as a subject and its interplay with culture is an issue Schrat has been and is concerned about. He has shown his work internationally since 1995.
Schrat works with different forms of visual narration. He likes to revert to traditional techniques like wood inlay (maqueterie), silhouette drawings or hanging scrolls. This techniques with their cultural precondition are interpretet contemporary. So narrative graphics, different types of illustration and large scale murals come into being.
Schrats projects are resarch driven. Social, political and especially economic relations are the backbone of his projects.
They are clothed in metaphorical, narrative surfaces, drawing on popular stories and folk tales. This can range from fairy tales to Starship Enterprise up to Harry Potter. Its entertaining, humoresque, and overspilling with narrative complexity. Hieronymus Bosch has sure been an ancestor.
Besides classic gallery pieces, a substantial part of his works are large scale murals and other site specific work. For instance at Forum Ludwig/Aachen Germany (2005/06), in Eat the Food, (MOCCA, Toronto) 2007, at Golden Eagle Art Center, Nanjing, 2013 or at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2014. An interesting position among the murals has Milk and Honey, a mural for a dinging hall of the German parliament, playing on the European fairytale of Cockaigne (courtesy siebenhaar art projects).
